NORFOLK — Sharon Ivy Jones hasn’t been seen since September 2002, when her apartment was found with furniture overturned and the cords pulled from her telephones.

Then 33, she never returned to work or touched her bank account. The daily phone calls to her family in New Jersey abruptly ceased.

Jones had left her 2-year-old daughter with the girl’s father one night while she went out with friends. She never saw the child again and has never called to check on her.

Jones’ family and friends, haunted by her absence, gathered near her old apartment Friday and announced that a $5,000 reward was being offered for information.

Their hope, said her father, Bobby Jones, of Red Bank, N.J., is that somebody who knows what happened to Sharon will come forward.

Too well, the Joneses have come to know the frustration and anxiety experienced by families of missing people. Somebody out there, Bobby Jones said, could “... help us put an end to this situation.’’

Jones had moved here to attend Norfolk State University. She also worked at a preschool program in Virginia Beach. She lived with her daughter, Kai, but was no longer involved with the sailor who was Kai’s father.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, Jones left the girl with her father and went out for the evening, according to her family. She was last seen around 3 a.m. Sunday in her red Toyota Tercel. She had mentioned going to a Taco Bell.

Then she simply vanished.

By Monday, police were looking for her. They found her car at Breezy Point Apartments, near Norfolk Naval Station, parked in its usual place.

Her apartment was a suspicious scene: the door was unlocked, items had been broken, and cords were pulled out of both telephones.

Her parents, alarmed, came down from New Jersey. They began caring for Kai. The police investigation never turned up any evidence of where Jones was after that night.

Her mother, Thelma, criticized Norfolk police efforts. “As far as I’m concerned, nobody really did anything to help find my daughter,’ she said bluntly in a park near the apartment complex where Jones lived.

She said that police, with whom she’s had little contact, did not adequately search her daughter’s apartment for clues.

Officer Chris Amos, police spokesman, said: “We have pursued every lead and done everything we can with what we have.”

Meanwhile, Jones’ parents have traveled back-and-forth from Norfolk to New Jersey, trying to find their daughter. It hasn’t been easy on them, said Tracey Boyd , a family friend.

Friday, Boyd, the Joneses and Cynthia Suarez, a family friend, announced a $5,000 grant from The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation. The foundation, started after three sightseers were killed in Yosemite National Park in 1999 , offers rewards to help find missing people and to bring violent criminals to justice.

Jones’ police case is still open.

“There’s been nothing to indicate she’s been active in another part of the country,” Amos said. “And nothing’s been discovered to indicate she’s dead.’’

Sharon Ivy Jones, a 33-year old mother of a 2-year old girl, disappeared on September 22, 2002 after attending a wedding and a dance in Norfolk, VA. After finding signs of a struggle and other evidence of foul play in her apartment, police officially labeled Jones’ disappearance as abduction. Since the day Sharon disappeared, her family has searched tirelessly for her. Her parents, Bobby and Thelma Jones, and sister, Stephanie traveled back and forth for months from their home in Red Bank, N.J. to pass out fliers and speak with Sharon’s friends and the police. Unfortunately, it appears as though their efforts have been in vain. There have been no new leads in the cas! e and there is still a mountain of unanswered questions. For one member of the Jones family these questions will remain unanswered forever. On December 4, 2003, Sharon’s beloved younger sister, Stephanie passed away. Stephanie was devoted to finding her sister and it is with the help of family and friends that the search for Sharon Ivy Jones will continue.

The Sharon Jones Reward Fund was established in October 2004. Our mission is to provide resources to offer a reward for information to help law enforcement officials locate Sharon and to solve her case. Additionally, we would like to raise public awareness surrounding the problem of missing persons and violent crime in this country.

Woman's disappearance is unsolved mystery

06:28 PM EDT on Monday, May 16, 2005

Reported by: Craig Civale

It’s been more than two years since Sharon Ivy Jones simply vanished, leaving behind her two-year-old daughter. The mystery still haunts her friends.

Common sense tells police that the 33-year-old single mother from Norfolk is not alive, but no one’s giving up hope.

"Sharon was a fun loving, caring, mother and daughter," remembers her mother, Thelma. "That little girl (Kia) was her heart and she would never walk away and leave her."

Jones worked as a teacher’s aide, struggling to make ends meet.

She had a busy day planned for that Saturday, September 21, 2002 -- a wedding and a night out with friends. But first, she went to Kia's father's house to drop off their child. He asked us not to show his face.

"Sharon was not the kind of person to take a guy home. How everything went down, I still don't understand," he said.

Following the wedding, Jones and two friends went to the Sons of Norfolk, a private club off Granby Street.

According to friends, she left the club shortly after 2:30 a.m. on September 22, drove a friend home then went home herself. Police believe she got to her apartment an hour later. Her car was in the parking lot of Breezy Point Apartments, near Naval Station Norfolk.

According to police, Jones' cell phone and the clothes she'd worn to the club were inside the apartment. It was then, 3:30 a.m. , that police believe something went wrong. They say Jones' apartment showed signs of a disturbance - there were papers scattered around and there were a few broken items and many telephone cords were pulled out of the wall.

"Either someone took her out of there or someone was waiting in the apartment, hiding in the apartment, when she got there," Kia's father added.

There were no signs that Jones had been hurt inside her apartment. And though her car was still parked at her apartment, the car keys and her apartment keys were missing. So was her ID.

Immediately, those close to her knew something terrible must have happened.

"Something happened to make Sharon leave. She didn't walk out of that apartment and abandon her child. She just didn't do it," said Det. Judy Bennett.

"She would have called us by now and she hasn't called, so something is wrong," her father, Bobby, realized.

Something was wrong. Over the months and years, police would interview dozens of witnesses, compile lists of suspects, but they are no closer to knowing Jones' whereabouts.

"We're praying each day that someone will call us and say we've seen your daughter, we've found your daughter," Mrs. Jones

Tuesday night on 13News at 11, we’ll look at efforts taken by friends, police and a psychic to find Sharon Jones.

Psychic believes missing mom is dead

11:00 PM EDT on Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Reported by: Craig Civale

A Norfolk mother vanished more than two years ago, leaving behind a young daughter. The investigation into Sharon Jones' disappearance has been intense. Police have interviewed dozens of witnesses and her family from New Jersey has come here a number of times to search for answers. A private investigator and a psychic were called in to help. Despite all that, the mystery remains.

In the early morning hours of September 22, 2002, police believe something, or someone, forced the 33-year-old single mother to leave her apartment. She hasn’t been seen again.

She'd gone to a Norfolk club with friends that Saturday night. Police believe she made it home because her car and belongings were in her apartment, but her place was in shambles.

"The apartment appeared to be in a state of disarray, phone unplugged, purse on sofa, and it was dumped out," said Det. Judy Bennett, the lead investigator on this case.

She calls Jones’ disappearance one of her toughest cases. "We've talked to I can't tell you how many people and I can't find anything in there that something should have happened to Sharon, that she would be in the wrong area, wrong part of town, just not her, just a nice girl.”

Det. Bennett admits Jones’ ex-boyfriend and father of her daughter, Kia, was a suspect.

George Scott, a sailor, was caring for Kia the night Sharon disappeared. He said a couple of things didn’t make sense. “She wasn't there and she wasn't calling, but her car was there. I thought that was awkward. I just thought she had a rough night."

Scott says he and a few other men close to Sharon gave a DNA sample. "When I went to the police department, I waived my rights. I took a polygraph. It came out inconclusive," Scott added.

13News Investigates: Sharon Jones, Part One
That’s how this case has progressed - no clear answers. As days turned into weeks and months into years, her family grew desperate. They hired a private investigator.

"The fact that she seemed to be living a good life, not involved with alcohol or drugs, had a child, loved her family, doing all the right things, for it to end this way, it would lead us in the direction that something bad happened," said Nick Fortunato.

The family also called on renowned psychic Silva Browne, who told them Sharon wasn’t alive and they’d find her body "in a wooded area with a clearing for trees, in Virginia, absolutely."

Police, meantime, kept running down leads and searching areas around her apartment. They came up empty.

Sharon's picture has been placed on a number of missing person Web sites and there are big rewards for answers about her disappearance.

But there are still no answers for Sharon’s family and her now four-year-old daughter, Kia, who has been living with her grandparents.

Although she was only two at the time, Kia understands something happened to her mother. "She'll come up to me and say ‘I miss mommy, do you know where mommy is?' I basically say to her ‘I miss your mommy, too. Your mommy is my daughter. We're looking for your mommy," says Jones' father, Bobby.

Sometimes, Mr. Jones says, he and Kia go for a ride and circle the block looking for Sharon. He says it makes her feel better.

From the family:

"Sharon's case will be highlighted on CNN Headline News (not the regular CNN) by Nancy Grace on June 23rd. I believe it comes on at 8:00 est, and then 10 and 1. I am sure about the 8:00 time, but not the others.

There is a website, but it's not finished. It's http://www.findsharonjones.com "

When singer/songwriter, Jannel Rap's sister (http://www.jannelrap.com), Gina Bos, disappeared Oct 17, 2000 she had no idea that this would be a pivitol life changing moment. Six months of slamming doors woke Jannel up in the middle of the night to do what she already does. The concept of using entertainment to get attention for the missing was born.
