Missing Woman: Michelle Angela Yarnell - MO - 10/25/03

Cash reward offered for information leading to missing Ivy Bend woman
Foundation puts up $5,000 after three years of searching

By Justin Ludwig/Lake Sun
Published: Monday, May 22, 2006 11:37 PM CDT

Michelle Angela Yarnell was last seen at her Ivy Bend residence on Oct. 25, 2003.

MORGAN COUNTY - After following hundreds of leads through nearly three years of searching, Morgan County Sheriff's Department Detective Ron Witt is hoping for a breakthrough in the longest missing persons case he's ever handled. Michelle Angela Yarnell was last seen at her Ivy Bend residence on Oct. 25, 2003. She left behind all of her personal items and did not contact family members, according to a sheriff's department press release. The search for the woman, who would now be 31 years old, has found new life in the reward being offered by the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation.

It is a group that helps families without economic means offer rewards for information in order to help law enforcement officials locate missing loved ones. To date, the Foundation has paid a total of $232,500 in rewards to citizens who helped locate missing persons across the country.

The reward is the latest in a series of efforts to bring the search for Yarnell to a conclusion. Witt has followed up on leads, gone knocking door-to-door and even tried psychics from Kentucky who donated their time, he said.

Yarnell has light brown hair, brown eyes and weighs approximately 170 pounds. She is five feet tall.

The reward is a one-time deal, Witt said. It has a time limit of six months. Anyone with information regarding Yarnell's disappearance should contact the MCSD at 378-5481.

ABOUT GINA: Singer/songwriter, Jannel Rap's sister Gina Bos, disappeared Oct 17, 2000. Gina's story had no scandal, no suspects and lacked the hook and intrigue to get the attention of the national public. Gina had simply vanished after performing at a pub in Lincoln, NE. Six months of slamming doors inspired Jannel into action . . . and the concept of using entertainment to get attention for the missing was born.

In 2001, Jannel organized a concert series in honor of her sister, called GINA for Missing Persons, bringing together recording artists from all over the country in an effort to raise awareness of all the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children who go missing every year. In addition, through GINA (Welcome to 411Gina.org - Uncovering Missing Pieces To Find The Missing) Jannel has produced a television series called "America Lost and FOUND", and now hosts a monthly international webcast featuring missing persons from around the globe.

Grassroots group seeks to build awareness of missing persons

By Ra'Vae Edwards
News Tribune

Two Mid-Missouri women who share a common bond - both have daughters who are missing - have formed an organization to help others in situations similar to theirs.

Missouri Missing still is in its beginning stages, but Peggy Florence and Marianne Asher-Chapman say they are dedicated to creating awareness about missing persons cases.

Since Florence's daughter, Jasmine Haslag, disappeared, she's worked with Chapman to build an organization geared to help families in a multitude of ways.

One of the main things I want this organization to do is to provide support for those who are going through this, Florence said. Before Jasmine went missing, I never thought about missing persons or how serious it is. And I think that is true with a lot of people. Unless it happens to you, you don't think about it.

Creating awareness and providing education about missing persons in Missouri are key to helping solve many of the cases, Chapman said.

We need to create awareness as to the extent of the seriousness of missing persons, Chapman said. The first 24 to 48 hours after a person goes missing is very crucial.

But if that person is an adult, we make the assumption they have just left, and that isn't always the case. Each case should be dealt with individually, based on that person's history.

Chapman's daughter, Michelle Angie Yarnell, has been missing since Oct. 25, 2003. Since her disappearance, Chapman has made appearances on the Montel Williams Show and her daughter's case has been mentioned on several nationally syndicated shows.

Each missing-persons case should be dealt with as serious as possible, Florence said. We know that there have been a lot of adults who go missing and then return after they were just in hiding because they were mad or whatever, but not every case is like that.

If you look at the statistics right now, there are more than 800 persons in Missouri who are missing. Those people are someone's daughter, mother, brother, father, sister and in some cases, grandparents. Improvements need to be made, and that is one of the many things Missouri Missing will be working on.

Overnight results are not expected, Florence and Chapman agree, but it is not something either of them plan on giving up.

I will never quit looking for my daughter, Chapman said. And I feel very strongly about this organization. I don't want to see other people go through what we have been through and if there is anything we can do to help, we certainly will.

Chapman and Florence are scheduled to meet with state legislators and members of the Missouri Highway Patrol on Tuesday at the Capitol to discuss changes in legislation.

A website and contact information are in the works.

Police resurrect 2003 missing woman case by declaring husband a "person of interest"

By Terri Sanders/LakeExpo.com
Friday, November 23, 2007 5:20 AM CST

Anyone with information about the location of Michael Shane Yarnell, 38, or Michelle Angela Yarnell, 32, is asked to contact the Morgan County Sheriffs Department at 573-378-5481, extension 122.

More than four years have passed since Michelle Angie Yarnell was reported missing. Now detectives are seeking assistance in locating her husband. In a press release issued Wednesday, the Morgan County Sheriffs Department named Michael Shane Yarnell a person of interest in the case of his missing wife.

Detectives are not releasing any information about the case other than to say they are interested in re-interviewing Yarnell, but, in order to do so, they have to find him first.

Authorities said Yarnells last known address was 3964 Ozark View Road in Morgan County. It is believed he no longer resides in the area, but authorities verified he has family members in both Kansas City and Moniteau County.

At the time of Angies disappearance, Yarnell told authorities his wife had left him for another man but did not provide the name of this alleged individual or his whereabouts.

Marianne Asher-Chapman, Angies mother, said although she does not know what has happened to cause the newfound interest, she is happy the authorities are still working on the case and that they are being proactive to find Yarnell.

According to Chapman, the last time she spoke to her daughter was before Oct. 24, 2003. She has not spoken with Yarnell for well over two years.

The last time I talked to Angie was in late October in 2003. We spoke on the phone about 15 or so minutes. She didnt indicate to me at that time that there was anything wrong or that she was seeing another man, Chapman said. After that I tried to call her several times and I just kept getting her answering machine. The weekend after that was when Mike (Yarnell) told me she had left.

Nearly a week after Angie went missing, Chapman said Yarnell drove to her home in Callaway County and claimed Angie had left him for another man. Yarnell said he did not know her whereabouts.

I knew something wasnt right. I just couldnt believe she would just leave and not tell me where she was going, Chapman said. Angie and I were very close and I was going through treatment for throat cancer at that time and I just knew she wouldnt leave me through all of that.

For the past four years, Chapman said she has searched desperately for answers.

You wouldnt believe how many letters I have written and asked for help and how many phone calls I have made looking for her, she said. I always come up empty. It just doesnt make sense.

Chapman said she was invited to appear on the Montel Williams Show in September, 2005.

That was always Angies favorite show so when they invited me to come as a guest I thought if she was out there somewhere watching the show, she would see me and surely she would contact me, she said. But she didnt. Nothing. Its really hard to describe how hard it is not knowing where she is or what has happened to your child.

After her appearance on the Montel Williams Show, Yarnells family told Chapman he left town. Chapman said there is no indication he has been heard from since. Family members also said Yarnell did not attend his fathers funeral earlier this year.

In Chapmans opinion, the biggest problem when adults go missing is the difficulty to get authorities to take it seriously at first because adults have the right to leave and not tell anyone where theyre going.

I dont have any idea how to explain what its like to have a missing person in your life, she said. If you dont have a missing person in your life, trust me you dont want to. It truly is an ambiguous loss.

Anyone with information about the location of Michael Shane Yarnell, 38, or Michelle Angela Yarnell, 32, is asked to contact the Morgan County Sheriffs Department at 573-378-5481, extension 122.

Above Images: Yarnell, circa 2003

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: October 25, 2003 from Ivy Bend, Missouri
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: May 20, 1975
Age at time of disappearance: 28 years old
Height and Weight: 5'0, 170 pounds

Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Light brown hair, brown eyes. Yarnell wears contact lenses or eyeglasses with round, gold wire frames. Her tongue and ears are pierced and she has small surgical scars on each side of her hip. Yarnell has three tattoos: a jagged barbed-wire fence in black ink around her right wrist, a green frog on her left shoulderblade, and the word "obey" in black cryptic writing elsewhere on her body. She goes by her middle name, Angela, or the nickname Angie.
Clothing/Jewelry Description: Possibly a white gold or silver watch, emerald earrings, and white gold or silver bracelets on her right wrist.

Details of Disappearance

Yarnell was last seen at her residence in the vicinity of the 3900 block of Ozark View Road in Ivy Bend, Missouri on October 25, 2003. Her husband of three years says he came home after work and Yarnell was gone. He said he assumed she had gone to Holts Summit, Missouri to visit her mother and would return in a few days, but she never did and has never been heard from again. Her mother reported her missing seven days later after Yarnell's husband came to her house to see his wife and discovered that she had never arrived at Holts Summit.

Two weeks after Yarnell vanished, her mother received a postcard supposedly from Yarnell, which was postmarked on November 8, 2003, from a small town in Arkansas. The postcard stated that Yarnell was en route to Texas to visit the family of someone named "Gary." Yarnell's loved ones do not know anyone by that name and do not believe she did either, and her mother does not believe Yarnell actually sent the postcard. She stated that the handwriting appeared markedly different from her daughter's.

Yarnell left all her personal belongings behind when she vanished. Her marriage was troubled, but Yarnell was close to her mother and her relatives do not believe she would leave without contacting them, as she has no history of such behavior. Her case remains unsolved.

Without a trace
Cold case resurfaces: Michelle Yarnell disappeared four years ago; Morgan County sheriff seeks missing woman's husband as a 'person of interest'

By Joyce L. Miller/Lake Sun
Published: Friday, November 23, 2007 10:37 PM CST

MORGAN COUNTY - Although officials have not commented, it appears there may be new information that might shed some light on a missing person case filed four years ago when Michelle Yarnell was first reported missing from her home in the Ivy Bend area.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Department has apparently renewed its efforts to locate Michelle Yarnell's husband, Michael.

In a statement released this week, the sheriff's department asked anyone with information on the whereabouts of Michael Shane Yarnell, 38, to contact authorities. His last known address is 3964 Ozark View Road, the home he shared with Michelle Yarnell until the day she disappeared.

Literally, without a trace.

The sheriff's department is now referring to Michael Yarnell as a person of interest. Michael Yarnell may be in the Kansas City metro area or the California, Mo., area, where he has relatives.

Michelle has not been seen since Oct. 24, 2003. She was 28 at the time.

Since then, detectives from Morgan County have tried to piece together the events that led up to her disappearance and hoped to come up with a lead that would put an end to the mystery.

For her mother, Marianne Asher-Chapman, of Holts Summit, Mo., it has been an agonizing four years. She has read and re-read 'Not knowing what happened to a child is the worst nightmare a parent can face.'

Shortly before Angie, as she was called by family and friends, disappeared, Chapman's stepson passed away.

Although difficult, she said she learned to deal with his death because she knows where he was and why, but it's different without any answers, she said.

To help ease the hurt and the uncertainty, Chapman has kept her daughter's trunk upstairs. Every year on her birthday, she buys her a present. She does the same at Christmas.

Just in case Angie comes back, she'll know she was never far from her mother's thoughts or hopes that she would someday come home.

Chapman said she may never have all the answers, but that isn't going to stop her from looking. The news that the detectives are searching for her daughter's husband is encouraging. Maybe that means the end of the nightmare is near, she said.

Making sense out of it all is impossible, she said.

She doesn't believe her daughter could have just picked up, walked away from her family, her home and her two dogs who were like children to her. As far as anyone can tell, Michelle Yarnell took nothing with her that October day.

She simply vanished.

The only physical reminders she has left to remember her daughter by are some old letters that she reads often, a necklace Angie had made for her and a few other odds and ends.

Those few things that she can touch, along with her memories, have sustained her.

'There's been so many theories and scenarios and rumors, a lot of rumors. I haven't ruled anything out and I've been on a lot of wild goose chases in the last 49 months, but until we know something else, I hold onto a small, tiny hope,' she said. 'I haven't heard from the detectives and the last time I heard anything about Michael, he had left town. That was quite awhile ago, around June of 2005.'

Will Angie be found and if she is, will she be alive? Chapman said she knows it doesn't look good, but until there's a body, she won't give up on that 'small, tiny hope.'

There is a $10,000 reward for information. Chapman hopes someday someone will step forward with information that will allow authorities to solve the case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's department at 573-378-5481.
