Mayfield, KY

Cold Case
By: Erica Byfield

Mayfield, KY - Losing a loved one can be heart breaking, but imagine talking your mother one day and the next she missing without a trace.

That's nightmare one heartland woman is living through.

Her mother Sandra Travis disappeared last summer from Graves County, Kentucky.

Dawn Vowell calls this one of her better days, "it's not knowing that is the worst," she said.

Knowing where her 59 year old mother is, Sandra Travis vanished July 31st, 2005.

Vowell says she's spent the last 11 months wondering, crying and looking for answers.

"I can't explain the emotions to you, you feel helpless, hopeless, frustrated because you're not getting any answers and you know there is somebody out there who knows something," said Vowell.

Yet to this date there are no leads or tips.

Travis's husband first told family members Sandra died in Mount Vernon while visiting Vowell, but later admitted to deputies he lied.

Next Bobby said Sandra ran off with a trucker from Carbondale.

Vowell tells me she doesn't believe it.

"I believe he knows what happened to her other wise he wouldn't told lies and he's refused to take a lie detector test," said Vowell.

Deep down inside Vowell's holding out hope, "I bought her a birthday card in November, I also bought her a mother's day card in May. I have those in my case and I will continue to buy them until I have answers."

She adds her own birthdays next month, July 22 and without a doubt each year a card with a special message arrives.

"It seems like every where you go you hit a brick wall and we still don't know anymore," said Vowell.

Vowell says she's not losing hope, she's just praying the mail man has a special delivery on the 22nd. That way she'll know momma's alright.

If you've seen or know where Sandra Travis could be please contact the graves county sheriffs department at 270-247-4501

New Leads Sought In Graves Woman's Disappearance
Thursday, July 31, 2008

MAYFIELD, KY - Dawn Vowell says she’s certain someone out there knows what happened to her mother who disappeared nearly 3 years ago.  She’s hoping someone will come forward with new information in the disappearance of Sandra Kay Travis of Graves County.  Travis was reported missing in August 2005.  A new investigator with the Graves County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the case and is re-interviewing people associated with the case.  Travis’s husband remains a person of interest in the case.  Hs gave authorities conflicting stories about what happened to his wife.  He first said that she had gone to Illinois and died.  Then he told police she ran away with another man.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact the Graves County Sheriff’s Office at 270-247-4501.

(I was out of town, so did not get this posted, but I am sure the previous shows are archived so you can still listen after the original airing.)

From the Family:

Hello Friends,

Sorry for the short notice, but I wanted to let you know that I will be on the Radio Show "Justice Interrupted" tomorrow Tuesday March 24th @ 10:25 pm Central Standard Time to talk about my mother Sandra Kay Travis' case.  My mother went missing almost 4 years ago 7/31/05 from her home in Mayfield, Kentucky.   The investigation in her case has not been what it should, which seems to be the norm for missing adults.  I've written letters to Representative, Senators, Kentucky Bureau of Investigation, Governor, Lt. Governor, etc.... with no results.  After almost 4 years we have yet been able to get a search warrant as the Commonwealth Attorney tells me "a missing person is not a crime.

Investigator Vito Colucci will also be on the show to discuss my mom's case and hopefully be able to give some suggestions.

Please feel free to go to the website:  www.justiceinterrupted and listen to the show, call in live to ask questions, email this to anyone you think may be able to help "Our Cause."    I know this may be late for some of you, but I would certainly appreciate knowing that I have friends out there supporting this case.  Maybe you will be able to get something out of it that will help your cases as well.

Thank you so much,

Dawn Vowell

From the Family:

This is a media release to let you know that America's Most Wanted will air "My Story" on my mother Sandra Kay Travis on their Saturday, September 26, 2009 show.  The "My Story" segment runs for approximately a little over 1 minute and will air between 8:30 - 9:00 pm Central Standard Time on FOX.   You can also go to the AMW website www.amw.com and click on "MY STORY" at the left of the screen and select MY STORY HOME to see more information on the case as well as see the video.

I feel very lucky to have been chosen by the AMW producers to have my mom's story on America's Most Wanted, as it is watched by millions around the country.   Hopefully, that one person who has information regarding my mom's disappearance will be willing to do the right thing and notify the authorities so that justice can be served and we can bring my mom home.

The family of X needs to know that I am not going away and I am not giving up.  The information that they have will not bring my mother back, but it will bring closure to my family and my mother will be able to be given the proper burial that every human being deserves.

Also, a $10,000 reward is still available to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person/persons responsible for the disappearance/murder of my mother and the recovery of her remains.  A $5000 reward offered by the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation and a $5000 reward offered by Crimestoppers.  The $5000 reward offered by The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation will expire in December 2009.    So please, anyone with any information no matter how small, (maybe it was something you saw, maybe it was something you heard,)  please contact the Graves County Sheriff's department at 270-247-4501, contact CRIME STOPPERS in Graves County, KY or call 1-800-CRIME-TV at AMERICA'S MOST WANTED to remain anonymous.

Thank you so much for your support for Missing Persons.  Every Missing Person deserves to  be found, their families deserve some sort of closure and those responsible must pay for their crimes.  One person can make a difference.  Please be that one person.

Please forward this to everyone you know to get the word out.

Sincerely,
Dawn M. Vowell
