Authorities search for missing Pembroke woman

By WTOC staff

PEMBROKE, GA (WTOC) - The search continues in Pembroke for a missing elderly woman more than 24 hours after she was last seen.

Police say 83-year-old Emma Carol, who went missing sometime Saturday, suffers from dementia and Alzheimer's. Carol was last seen off Highway 280 and Sunday, a major search began involving authorities, her family and friends.

Investigators say they have been searching by air and land and the Department of Natural Resources and Georgia State Patrol have helped in the search.

Bryan County Emergency Medical Crews are asking folks to look for her.

"Just keep a look out. Her family would like to see her come home and we will continue searching until we have her back," Jim Anderson of the Bryan County EMS said.

"We started yesterday late in the afternoon," family friend Carolyn Green explained.  "We've been round the clock going back over steps hoping she would appear somewhere near but no luck."

Authorities say Emma Carol has gone missing before, but has been found safe. If you see Emma, call Bryan County EMS (912) 858-2799.

Pembroke Missing Woman Search

By Tina Tyus-Shaw
Published: July 19, 2009

Pembroke’s Carroll Crossing Road is transformed into a search site.  Rescue crews are looking for Emma Carroll.

“Hoping for the best but worried it’ll be the worse.  “Suffering from dementia, the 83-year-old was reported missing after one of her daughter’s left the house for a few minutes Saturday.  “When they come back both doors were open just assume she walked off,” says Jim Anderson.  “She may not remember you know how to tell you where she is or where she should be - might not even remember at this point who she is,” says Ruby Williams.  “This area is surrounded y trees and ponds one reason why family members are so concerned.”

They say Miss Emma has wandered away twice before.  Right now all they can do is hold on to hope and prayer. “Been searching the woods walking through the swamp, walking some of everywhere as far as the woods would take me to find my grandmother,” says Gary Mobley.  As concern ripples across family member faces no one is giving up - they’re hoping for a happy reunion.

“Keep a look out for her.  Her family would like to see her come home, and we’ll continue searching until we can get her back.” Family members say Emma Carroll was last seen wearing a navy blue dress with flowers and a large white collar.

If you see her - please call the Bryan County Sheriff’s Department at (912) 653-2899 or call 911.

Search continues Wednesday for missing woman

Ross Blair rblair@bryancountynews.net 912-756-3454

Updated: July 22, 2009 1 a.m.

Local emergency agencies continued searching Tuesday for 83-year-old North Bryan resident Emma Carroll, who suffers from dementia.

Bryan County Emergency Services Director Jim Anderson said Carroll was last seen Saturday evening at her home on Caroll Crossing Road in Groveland, near Hwy. 280 and the Evans County line. He said foul play is not suspected and she is believed to have wandered off from her residence.

Her daughter, Alethia Carroll, lives right next door but reportedly left to go to the store at 6 p.m. and came home at 8 p.m. to find the front door open and her mother nowhere to be found. She has not been seen since. Alethia Carroll said her mother has wandered off two other times but was quickly found.

The search escalated Monday when a total of fifteen local emergency agencies and many volunteers joined in a 100-man search that combed the area. It included the Bryan County mobile command vehicle setting up just outside the Carroll home and a helicopter search by Fort Stewart soldiers.

Unfortunately, no sign of the missing woman was found by any of the searchers Tuesday evening.

"The search team is doing a fantastic job," Alethia Carroll said Monday. "We just hope and pray for her to be found safe. If anybody has seen her, please call the police immediately. She needs to come home and time is of the essence."

Anderson said the search scaled down a bit Tuesday, but "it's still a large scale operation." In addition to Bryan agencies, teams from the Red Cross, GSAR (Georgia Search and Rescue) and Georgia Body and Recovery continued searching Tuesday, including the use of dogs.

"The woods are real thick, but there are a lot of ATV riders combing the woods," said Bryan County Red Cross DAT (Disaster Action Team) member Christy Waters. "We will be here as long as there is an ongoing search. We're still hopeful to find some sign - like a torn piece of clothing or footprints. I'm very hopeful that we'll find her."

Investigator Donnie Thomas said the Bryan County Sheriff's Department put out a Mattie Alert Monday, which entails tapping into radio broadcasts and sending "be on the lookout" teletypes to local lottery systems.

Meanwhile, the family is banding together at Emma Carroll's home and praying for a homecoming.

"We are still full of hope," her daughter Ruby Williams said Tuesday. "We are so thankful for everybody's support. The way this community has come together is inspiring."

Carroll was last seen in a blue dress with a large white collar and a white flower pattern on it. She is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 170 pounds.

Anyone with any information on Carroll's whereabouts is urged to call 911.
Anyone interesting in volunteering for the search can call the Red Cross at 651-5300.

Elderly woman still missing
Search goes on for 83-year-old North Bryan resident who suffers from dementia

By Ross Blair

Updated: July 25, 2009 1 a.m.

Although it has been nearly a week since her disappearance, local emergency agencies continued searching Friday for 83-year-old North Bryan resident Emma Carroll, who suffers from dementia.

Bryan County Emergency Services Director Jim Anderson said Carroll was last seen the evening of Saturday, July 18 at her home on Caroll Crossing Road in Groveland, near Hwy. 280 and the Evans County line. He said foul play is not suspected and she is believed to have wandered off from her residence.

Anderson said no leads have been discovered, "but I can tell you where she’s not."

He said an area of three square miles around the Carroll home has been closely searched. He said there were still about 50 people continuing to search the area, "and we plan to continue on through at least Sunday. We’ll reevaluate at that point."

"We’re still hopeful," said Alethia Carroll, the missing woman’s daughter. "We’re feeling like somebody picked her up in an automobile. Maybe she made it out there to 280. We’re just guessing though because we don’t have any facts right now."

Alethia Carroll said some volunteers are taking the search further toward Claxton as well as Pembroke, and dogs are still being used. She also said flyers are being distributed throughout the area.

Carroll was last seen in a blue dress with a large white collar and a white flower pattern on it. She is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 170 pounds.

Anyone with any information on Carroll’s whereabouts is urged to call 911 or Bryan County Sheriff’s Department at (912) 653-2899.

Search for missing Bryan County woman suspended
Jamie Parker | Monday, July 27, 2009 at 12:30 am

PEMBROKE - The search for a Bryan County woman missing more than a week was suspended Sunday afternoon.

Emma Carroll, an 83-year-old Alzheimer's patient, wandered from her rural Bryan County home July 18 and has not been seen since.

"It has been a long, frustrating week, but we are to the point where we literally do not know where else to look," Jim Anderson, Bryan County Emergency Services director, said Sunday.

Carroll's family gathered behind her home Sunday afternoon west of Pembroke to express their appreciation for the citizen volunteers as well as 18 local, state and federal agencies who aided in the search.

"The support has been tremendous, the people who have come from the surrounding counties to do whatever they were able to do, provided us with the comfort to keep going and continue to be hopeful that she is out there somewhere, and that somebody will see her and call us and we will be reunited," said Carroll's daughter Ruby Williams. "It has been very uplifting."

Williams said the family understood that it was time to end the active search. "We agree with Mr. Anderson that the area out here has been covered as well as it could be covered. They couldn't stay forever."

Even with that stage of the search ended, the family is not without hope.

"We have not given up on locating our mom," Williams said. "We don't know where she is. It is quite a puzzle but at the same time we are still hopeful and we are still prayerful that she is going to be found, she is going to be safe and reunited with us."

The family will now concentrate efforts to locate Carroll by making sure everyone possible knows she is missing.

"I talked to someone yesterday who didn't even know she was missing," Williams added. "We are going to establish a foot patrol with fliers and use word of mouth to keep getting the word out. Hopefully someone will see her and bring her home."

The missing woman

Emma Carroll is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall and 170 pounds. She was last seen wearing a blue dress with a large white collar and small white flowers.

Anyone with information regarding Carroll's whereabouts is urged to call 911 or the Bryan County Sheriff's Department at 912-653-3800.

Search for missing woman halted
Organized hunt over, now officials hope public can help locate 83-year-old woman

Ross Blair
Posted: July 28, 2009  7:13 p.m.
Updated: July 29, 2009 1 a.m.

The search for the elderly North Bryan woman who has been missing since July 18 has been suspended.

Eighteen agencies participated in the search for Emma Carroll for eight days, but no clues were found as to her whereabouts.

"It has been a long hard and sometimes frustrating week, but we are now to the point that we literally do not know where else to look," Bryan County Emergency Management Director Jim Anderson said.

Carroll, 83, apparently walked away from home between and 6-8 p.m only July 18. She suffers from dementia, her family said. Anderson said authorities will continue to search for Carroll through the media, flyers and the internet.

Anderson thanked everyone who helped "whether by searching the woods, volunteering at the command post or with the Red Cross."

In all, hundreds of volunteers spent more than 3,500 man hours looking for Carroll.

Anderson said the search efforts from Col. Frank Williams and the students of the Youth Challenge Academy "were truly an asset to this operation. The effort that these young men put into the search was astronomical."

One of the missing woman’s daughter, Alethia Carroll, said her mother may have made her way to Hwy. 280 and gotten into an automobile with someone. She said the family is still holding onto hope that Emma Carroll will be found and brought home safely.

"We’re completely satisfied with what they (search team) did," Alethia Carroll said. "There wasn’t anything else they could do. Every bit of these woods has been searched."

Carroll said authorities continue to come by the Carroll residence to check up on the family and "let us know that they’re not leaving us." She said some officers on ATVs continue to search the area as well.

"We’re still clinging to hope," Carroll said. "We need to know something. She didn’t just vanish off the face of the Earth. We are considering the possibility of getting a private investigator - For us (Carroll family), the search didn’t end Sunday night. It just goes to another level."

At a press conference, family members formally thanked searchers Sunday afternoon, an hour before the search was officially called off.

"Thank you doesn’t seem like enough," said Ruby Williams, another of Carroll’s daughters who spoke for the family Sunday, "but we thank you for all you have done."

Williams also said she hopes her mother’s disappearance will convince others with elderly parents to get GPS tracking devices. The family had planned to get one for Carroll on July 20.

"If we’d done it Friday (July 17), she’d still be here," Williams said.

Carroll was last seen in a blue dress with a large white collar and a white flower pattern on it. She is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 170 pounds.

Anyone with any information on Carroll’s whereabouts is urged to call 911 or Jim Anderson at 858-2799.

Dozens turn out to remember a missing woman

Oct 11, 2009
By WTOC Staff

PEMBROKE, GA (WTOC) - Dozens turned out for a vigil in Pembroke still looking for answers in the disappearance of 83 year old Emma Carroll.

The elderly woman disappeared from her home three months ago.

Every pew was full at Emma Carroll's church Saturday night. Every one except the one she use to sit in. Instead now there's a yellow ribbon, making it clear Carroll won't be forgotten.

"Tonight we're waiting, and we're watching, we're waiting for mother Emma Carrol," said Carroll's daughter Ruby Williams.

Williams, along with her brothers and sisters, Carroll's grandchildren and her friends all came together to remind everyone not to give up hope. Eighty-three year old Emma Carroll, who suffers from dementia, wandered away from her Pembroke home back in July. No one has seen or heard from her since. Some feel she's probably dead, but her family does not.

Following the church service everyone headed outside. One by one they lit their candles until all you could see was a glow of light outside the church.

Carroll's grandson Gary Mobley says he wasn't sure about coming tonight. He didn't want to feel like this was a memorial service. But he says after seeing the turnout and listening to what folks had to say, he's glad he's here.

"This has really been a blessing. I am rejuvinated with hope now. My faith was dwindling and I'm back to where I need to be," said Gary Mobley.

Hopefully Carroll will be back where she needs to be too--back home here with her family.

If you have any information on Emma Carroll's disappearance - call police,
